Construction of the John Smith Barge "Explorer"
As part of the Jamestown Foundation's America's 400th anniversary celebration, the Deltaville Maritime Museum, Holly Point Nature Park, and community association teamed up to reproduce a historically accurate reproduction of the John Smith Barge. For this, they hired Stefan Auer, an experienced boat builder, living locally to constuct the vessels based on plans developed from the little information available on the barge.

Local Newspaper recognition:
Here's a posting from Deltaville, Va's local newspaper, the Southside Sentinel, of a splendid image of the Explorer taking her maiden sail.
The Explorer was built at the Deltaville Maritime Museum in Deltaville, Virginia. On a sad note, we regret to inform you that the Museum caught fire in 2012 destroying the museum, pavilion, and some irreplaceable boats and artifacts. Please consider donating some money to the museum to aid in their ongoing effort to rebuild all that was lost by visiting this site and clicking on the Donate button at the bottom of the page: http://www.deltavillemuseum.com/ Or write to: Deltaville Maritime Museum P.O.
